We strive for a balance between profitable growth, protection of the environment, and responsible actions towards all shareholder groups. We base our actions on an integral view and sustainability combined with social responsibility. Our products are durable and do not harm the environment, neither in their production nor their recycling. New products are added to our portfolio only after a careful examination of the recyclability of the used materials, the share of machining and environmental friendliness, and the sustainability of the materials being used. As of 2015 we obtain 100% of our electricity from environmentally sustainable energy sources. In addition, by investing in recycling systems for solvents we also make one more contribution to the reduction of our environmental footprint.
Green Globe is an internationally recognised standard and evaluates sustainable behaviour in a company. There is no comparable certification system because Green Globe not only evaluates sustainability with regard to environmental friendliness but also considers the economic and social aspects in a company. The organisation’s key statement is to enable holistic and sustainable management on the basis of far-reaching approaches regarding business management, the environment, and social responsibility both locally and internationally, adherence to legislation and regulations, and consideration of cultural heritage.
Companies have to meet clearly defined requirements in order to receive a Green Globe certificate. For these criteria to remain dynamic and reflect any changes on an international level, they are reassessed and adapted on an annual basis. In the furniture industry, Thonet is the only company that not only meets these standards but exceeds and implements them and has received the “Certificate for sustainable and environmentally friendly management”.
As a Green Globe Gold Member since November 2015 we are one of the companies certified by the Green Globe Standard for more than 5 consecutive years. The Green Globe Gold Membership signifies our corporate responsibility with regard to the use of natural resources and consideration for our employees and local communities.
The term sustainability, as generally understood, consists of three components that are also described as the three-pillar model of sustainability:
1. Ecological sustainability stands for the conservation of nature and the environment for future generations. It comprises the conservation of biodiversity, climate protection, the preservation of cultural and landscape areas in their original state, and a generally careful handling of the natural environment.
2. Based on the principle of economic sustainability, the economic approach has to be conceived such that it sustainably provides a sound basis for acquisition and wealth. Of special importance is the protection of economic resources as opposed to exploitation of those resources.
3. Social sustainability understands the development of society as one way to enable the participation of all members of a community. This comprises an offsetting of social powers with the goal to achieve a sustainable society worth living in.
