The history of tubular steel is closely linked to the Bauhaus style. In the 1920s, architects working, as lecturers at the Bauhaus experimented with cold bent tubular steel. The Dutchman Mart Stam developed his revolutionary cantilever without hind legs which sowed the seed for subsequent cantilever models also realised by Mart Stam as well as designers such as Marcel Breuer and Mies van der Rohe at Thonet. The cantilever chair is today regarded as the most important furniture innovation of the 20th century.
