"Bentwood and beyond - Thonet and modern furniture design"

"Bentwood and beyond - Thonet and modern furniture design"

Another exhibition focusing on the 200-year history of Thonet will be opening on 18 December 2019.

This time in Vienna, the city that was of great significance in the company’s success story: in 1842, the German cabinetmaker Michael Thonet moved from Boppard/Rhine to Vienna, where he was able to perfect the bentwood furniture he had developed and where he established the biggest furniture empire of the 19th century. The exhibition at the MAK Vienna will be illustrating the fundamental role the Thonet company played in modern furniture design, putting Thonet’s characteristic and world-famous bentwood furniture in the context of contemporary technological, typological, aesthetic and historical developments.

Thonet is one of the major lenders; many other exhibits are from the MAK’s own collection.
