If there is ever a good reason for a colourful environment, it is certainly at a restaurant located in the landmark “Malkasten” (paint box). The traditional Düsseldorf Künstlerverein Malkasten artist association, with its headquarters in the centrally located Hofgarten, houses one of the three “Lido” restaurants. The history and character of the house were well considered in the design of the space: a colourfully patterned 400 m² carpet composition in the main hall is a design by artist Rosemarie Trockel. Matching it, 110 colourful Thonet cantilever chairs S 43 in various RAL colours are grouped around casually arranged bistro tables. Seats and backrests as well as the tubular steel frames were lacquered in especially coordinated colours. Here, the timeless, iconic chairs by Mart Stam enter into a joyful, carefree symbiosis with the art on the floor and on the walls.

In addition, the restaurant’s two galleries were furnished with Thonet chairs: 32 chairs model S 33, which is considered the first cantilever chair in furniture history, add to a more reserved and elegant atmosphere in a version with black lacquered frame and natural brown buffalo leather. At the bar, 60 black bentwood barstools 204 M invite guests to stylishly have a drink after dining. The Düsseldorf based Capricorn Group and the THONETshop Düsseldorf are responsible for the design and furnishing.
