Programme range 860 becomes a cosy lounge ensemble: rocking chair, bench and side tables complete the wooden furniture collection

The stylish lounge chair 860, which was presented at the Salone del Mobile 2015, now has great company: at imm cologne 2016, this distinctive design is joined by the 862F, a comfortable two-seater bench version, together with two side tables, the 1861 and the 1860, and a new rocking chair edition, the 866 F, which offers a relaxation escape from the hectic pace of life. The characteristic aesthetic theme of the triangle within the form of the 860 also influences the new designs, allowing for random groupings within the range, resulting in combinations that are both dynamic and harmonious. The new models also feature the invitingly soft seat and backrest cushions that make the series ideal for either public spaces such as hotel lobbies and bars or private living rooms – and this welcoming softness makes an intriguing contrast to the graphic, clear contours and geometry of the wooden frame.

This extension to the programme is intended to offer a holistic option to designing elegant lounge areas, whether in contract or residential environments. “After evaluating our market research, the result was unmistakably clear: a two-seater bench, a rocking chair and two side tables with different dimensions were required to complete the range,” says designer Lydia Brodde. The two-seater bench 862 F is a logical addition and its dimensions make it ideal as a centrepiece within a seating landscape that is both functional and graceful. Formally, the design attributes of the original 860 armchair (for which the designer found plentiful inspiration within the comprehensive Thonet archives), are preserved in the bench and, due to the extended lines, these aesthetics are further enhanced. Thanks to its unimposing form, the two-seater takes into account the demands of urban lifestyles and can also be effortlessly positioned in smaller rooms. Despite the reduced dimensions, optimum comfort is ensured and during the development phase, particular value was placed on creating a truly relaxing and comfortable experience.

The 866 F rocking chair is presented with similar compactness and welcoming usability. The geometric details underline the elegance of this chair and make it a collector’s item. An intensive study of the historical bentwood rocking chairs in the Thonet archive also allowed for the development of the ideal radius: thanks to the angles and curvature of the base, the chair’s rocking movement is gentle and calm. A profiled insert made from high grade plastic within the rocking surface enables silent movement while also protecting the floor. Every carefully considered detail of this design ensures pure relaxation.

The 1861 and 1860 side tables round off the ensemble, while also offering highly practical and versatile solutions. The small 1861 table impresses with its visual lightness, delicate construction, compact size and attractive combination of materials. The finely processed solid wood frame forms the graphic foundation of the design. The lightweight, reduced dimensions enable easy handling. The larger 1860 table echoes the fundamental aesthetic of the triangle in its leg shape and playfully establishes the formal relationship with the 860 product family. The rounded form of the table top effortlessly suits any space and allows for divers configurations. Several chairs and benches can be grouped around it, and it also harmoniously works with its smaller sibling, the 1861. Thin, black metal rods are integrated to the solid base frame, emphasizing the lightweight look of the table while reinterpreting its classic form in a modern way.

The new seating options and side tables of the 860 range, as with the armchair, are available in oak, ash and walnut. By choosing from the standard surface finishes and textiles of Thonet, these models can be playfully combined with other furniture made by the historic Frankenberg-based company. For the side tables, two different tabletop materials are available: a solid wood panel matching the frame or a white, solid surface panel that is easy to care for and highly suited to the contract segment. In the white version, the metal rods of the table are also lacquered in white.
