Scandinavian charm meets German design history: Thonet’s new KUULA table lamp

Thonet’s vision for the world of living room furniture is beautifully enhanced with the curvaceous new KUULA globe light. In cooperation with lamp manufacturer Oligo, the famed German furniture company presents a product that draws the eye with its elegant, minimalist design. The spherical, hand blown glass luminaire, perfectly balanced on a sleek aluminium base, is reminiscent of the kind of lamps that traditionally grace Nordic windowsills, while at the same time it honours the timeless essence of Bauhaus design. The KUULA table lamp is equipped with cutting-edge technology: the energy-efficient LED with its remarkable output of 1,000 lumens creates an appealing warm-white light in any room. The subtle, dimmable light switch, which is a design element in itself, allows for easy adjustment of the lamp and its lighting levels, depending on task or mood.

By virtue of a long history of collaboration, Thonet has a close philosophical connection with the Bauhaus school of design. Now, through designer Uli Budde, the brand has posed a question: if the designers of that iconic era were to explore the aesthetic and functional properties of a lamp using today’s technological possibilities, what might be the result? Managing Director Thorsten Muck comments: “Uli Budde’s design immediately fascinated us. The combination of the emotional effects of the lighting, the simplicity of the design, the fascinating technology and playful operation made our hearts beat a little faster.” KUULA means “globe” or “sphere” in Finnish, hence the distinctive hallmark of the lamp: the minimalist glass globe. It seems to float above the base, and its light can be adjusted to individual requirements thanks to a dimmer. The addition of a specially calculated and conceived lens assures that the light is directed to the opalescent section of the globe, guaranteeing effective, glare-free illumination. The opalescent, sand-blasted part of the glass globe is also invisibly coated to prevent fingerprints.

As experts in the construction of furniture, Thonet was conscious of needing a skilled and creative partner within the lighting industry in order to realise this sophisticated project. Key values such as the sustainable handling of resources, the highest standards of quality, excellence in craftsmanship and superior technical competence created a fluent connection between Thonet and chosen partner Oligo. The German lighting manufacturer is based near Bonn, where the company manufactures products with a high degree of handcrafting. Due to Oligo’s vital contribution to development and production, the partners decided to not only combine distribution channels to bring the lamp to market but to also co-brand the design with both companies’ logos.

Initially, KUULA will be available in four versions: with a black or white base and with light colours of either warm or neutral white. The warm white version (3,000 Kelvin) has the effect of a low voltage halogen lamp. The neutral white version (4,000 Kelvin) achieves a slightly cooler lighting effect.
