Opposites attract: the striking new chair S 830 banks on a dialogue between curves and edges

With the new programme range S 830, Thonet has developed a club chair that stands out from the crowd by virtue of its contrasts: an elegant interaction between flowing and straight lines makes the design both feminine and masculine at once. It is precisely this juxtaposition of opposites that lends this fully upholstered chair its intriguing sophistication. The effect can be enhanced by choosing various combinations of leathers or fabrics for the inner and outer shells. The S 830 – as with the new lounge furniture programme ranges S 650 and 860 – deliberately yet imaginatively recalls the proud Thonet heritage, in this case the company’s expertise with tubular steel.

With its open form, the particular comfort of the S 830 chair invites the user to take welcome rest, whether in private or public spaces. Its curved backrest seamlessly merges into the padded yet angular armrests, which in turn cradle a soft seat cushion – embracing the user in a protective shell. The flowing lines are reflected also in the supports: in two versions, both the base plate panel with pedestal and the tubular steel frame are reduced to a minimum and underline the contour of the seat without stealing its limelight. This choice of alternative frames means that the chair can be integrated easily into a wide range of environments, from waiting areas to public lounges and private living rooms.

Thanks to the possibilities for individualising the design, the S 830 can harmonise with multiple interior design styles. Colour and material combinations can be chosen to complement other pieces of furniture: “Depending on the combination, the result can be a new and individual collector’s item which can stand alone as a highlight or work together in a larger grouping. Depending on personal taste and preferences, the variations are countless,” says designer Emilia Becker of the Thonet Design Team. Furthermore, each chair can be differentiated with ornamental seams or piping to emphasise the design’s refined contours. The S 830 can thus offer either a uniform aesthetic for the contract or residential segment or create a colourful and eye-catching accent.

For inspiration, Emilia Becker referred to the comprehensive Thonet archives in Frankenberg, “Thonet has the unique advantage of being able to look back on a long history and tradition and it was a great privilege to design within this environment and culture. By viewing the extensive historic archives, new ideas automatically arose.”
