Pure Elegance: the 580 Chair Series

Design: Claudio Bellini 2010/2011

Italian designer Claudio Bellini has designed an elegant chair series for Thonet, for both living and dining areas. The pure form of the 580 upholstered chair was introduced at the Milan furniture fair and complements the already existing 1580 table series. Characteristic of this chair series are the continuous backrest element and the slim, upholstered seat that lays flush on the four-legged chair frame with its graceful, concave legs.

In line with Thonet's design philosophy, Claudio Bellini intended his chair to exhibit a clear, pure design language with a contemporary look. According to the designer: "The aim was to produce a visually striking form for a wooden chair that would, at the same time, display a subtle elegance. The challenge for this design lay in the ambivalence between its visual strength and light appearance. The result is a chair with a slim, upholstered seat that provides great seating comfort."

The 580 chair series is available with and without armrests. The version with the continuous, elegant armrests is slightly wider and is intended for use in living spaces. The seat is formed from cold-cure foam that covers the inner metal structure and suspension system, providing cushioning and comfort. The four-legged chair frame is available in stained beech, oak or walnut. The upholstery fabric can be freely selected from the Thonet collection.

Pure and Natural: The 1580 Table Series

The gently curved edges of the tabletop, and the concave legs - a visual language adopted also in the 580 chair series - gives this table a striking, contemporary appearance. With its slender tabletop and beautifully shaped legs in solid wood, the 1580 series projects an informal elegance: it speaks the language of its time, without trying to be fashionable. According to the designer: "For Thonet, I wanted to create a product that radiates naturalness based on its simple forms - which is not least achieved through the use of solid wood." The tabletops are available in four different sizes. Frames and tabletops come in beech (natural or stained), oak (bleached or stained black) and walnut. A moulded white mineral tabletop is also available.

Thanks to the wide range of available finishes, the table and chair series can be used in a variety of different domestic interiors.
