Thonet S 830

October 2016

Thonet sets the table: the writing panel makes club chair S 830 a comfortable workplace

The club chair S 830 has been firmly anchored in the Thonet portfolio since the Salone del Mobile 2015. At this year’s Orgatec, the Frankenberg based company presents new frame versions and a writing panel for the striking armchair. The small writing panel can be mounted into the seat shell – on the right or left side – and swivels. Tablets and smaller laptops as well as notebooks or drinks can be placed on the teardrop-shaped panel. In addition to the already established base plate and tubular steel four-leg frames (S 832 and S 831), the new collection now includes version 835 with bentwood legs, the cantilever tubular steel frame S 834 with a height adjusted for dining tables, and the four-leg cross frame S 833.

Chair S 830 with the writing panel is especially suitable for use in seminar and conference rooms or waiting areas: grouped in a casual circle, it invites short meetings. In lobby and lounge areas, it is not only an eye catcher but also a comfortable place for working and retreating. The three new frames made of high-quality materials change the appearance of the S 830 and, at the same time, extend its possibilities of use: with the wooden frame made of bent beech, the 835 builds a bridge to the  bentwood tradition and represents a comfortable solution for the living environment or in hotel rooms. The organic shape of the wooden frame emphasises the flowing lines of the shell that protectively embraces the person sitting in it. In combination with the cantilever tubular steel frame, the chair S 834 is reminiscent of a look relating to the Bauhaus era and also assures comfortable hours of sitting in restaurants. Model S 833 with the filigree and elegant aluminium four-leg cross frame feels at home in conference halls or lounge areas.

Range S 830 is based on the upholstered shell: its curved back seamlessly merges with the edgy armrests that enclose a soft seat cushion. Colour and material combinations of the covers can be individually selected: “Depending on the combination, a favourite piece with its very own character is  created, a focal point by itself or in a group. Countless variations and possibilities for combinations result, depending on personal taste and preference,” says designer Emilia Becker of the Thonet Design Team.

The comprehensive company archives in Frankenberg served as a source of inspiration for Emilia Becker for the chair and the different frames. “Thonet looks back on a long history and tradition. It was therefore very exciting to design with these aspects in mind. Browsing through the historical archives with the numerous designs automatically inspired new ideas.”
