Starting a family – Thonet style: Three new frames make chair S 830 a versatile all-rounder
The three new frames of range S 830 are a small yet precisely conceived extension with a big effect. The club chair, which was presented at the Salone del Mobile 2015, gets three new types of frames from designer Emilia Becker that are formally adjusted to the unchanged upholstered shell and reminiscent of some of the company’s famous models: joining the available base plate panel and four-leg tubular steel frames (S 832 and S 831) are the version 835 with bentwood legs, the tubular steel cantilever frame S 834 with a height appropriate for dining tables and the four-leg cross frame S 833, which represents both a comfortable and striking solution for everyday office work in meeting or conferencing rooms. The upholstered shell, which plays with flowing and straight lines in a sophisticated way, naturally and logically connects with the elegant frames.
The new frames, made of high-quality materials, not only change the appearance of S 830 but also expand the possibilities of use: with the wooden frame made of bent beech, oak or ash wood, the 835 establishes a link with Thonet’s tradition and provides a comfortable solution for living rooms or hotel rooms. The organic shape of the wooden frame emphasizes the flowing lines of the shell, which protectively embraces the user. Combined with the tubular steel cantilever frame, chair S 834 gets a look reminiscent of the Bauhaus era. Thanks to the modified height, this version enables comfortable hours of delight in private dining rooms as well as restaurants. Model S 833 with the filigree and elegant four-leg cross frame made of flat steel feels best in the conferencing or lounge segment. In addition, this small chair perfectly matches other models in Thonet’s portfolio for use in working and conferencing environments.
The upholstered shell forms the basis for range S 830: its curved back seamlessly merges with the edgy armrests, which frame a soft seat cushion. The colour and material combinations of the cover can be individually selected: “Depending on the combination, you get a favourite piece of furniture with its very own character that can stand alone as a highlight or in a group. Countless variations and combinations are possible, depending on personal taste and preference,” says designer Emilia Becker of the Thonet Design Team.
Emilia Becker used the comprehensive archives of the company in Frankenberg as a source of inspiration for the chair and individual frames. “Thonet looks back on a long history and tradition, and it was very exciting to design with these aspects in mind. Viewing the historical archives with the numerous designs automatically triggered new ideas.”
