Outdoors and indoors at their best: Thonet presents a range of new products at the Salone del Mobile 2016 in Milan

The Frankenberg-based company has committed itself to the project of creating complete living environments with Thonet. This spring, the project is extended into the garden and onto the terrace: the “Thonet All Seasons” outdoor collection, which provides selected tubular steel classics from the Bauhaus era with a weather-resistant outfit, will be in the spotlight at the Salone del Mobile in hall 5 stand E12 (12-17 April 2016). In the living segment, the numerous Thonet chairs also get stylish company with the addition of two new table designs: the elegant side table 1025 by Belgian designer James Van Vossel creates an effective play with perspectives due to its three ingeniously arranged legs. In addition, the solid wood table 1060 by Dutch designer Jorre van Ast represents modern lightness – at the same time, with its bent details it establishes a reference to the company’s bentwood tradition. The sofa range 2000 presented at the Salone del Mobile 2015 is expanded with a new bentwood armchair; new frame versions of the club chair range S 830 are presented, and the lounge range 860 is rounded out with a rocking chair and small bench. In addition to its exhibition at the trade fair, Thonet  is represented in Milan’s city centre with a special project in the “Wallpaper* Handmade” exhibition: a side table duo was created in collaboration with Belgian designer Sylvain Willenz, subtly combining the typical Thonet materials bentwood, tubular steel and cane wicker.

“Thonet All Seasons”: the collection for any kind of weather

With the new “Thonet All Seasons” outdoor collection, Thonet offers its customers the possibility to use the most popular tubular steel classics in all seasons for the first time: thanks to a special technology, selected icons from the Bauhaus era including the chairs S 33 and S 34 by Mart Stam, the lounge chair S 35, the side table B 9 by Marcel Breuer and the cantilever chair S 533 by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe have received a weather-resistant top coat with the “ThonetProtect®” surface. The collection is especially flexible due to its rich variety of versions: tubular steel, mesh upholstery and cushions can be selected and combined in a range of colours. In bright shades, they set cheerful highlights or, in subtle colours, lend a classic, elegant flair, making them perfectly suitable for use not only outdoors but also in living or dining rooms.

A graphic eureka effect: the new side table 1025

This design surprises at first, second and third glance: the three legs of the side table 1025 by James Van Vossel are arranged in a way that they describe an imaginary circle on the floor. At their tops they seem to embrace each other, while they appear as perfectly lined-up flush circles on the surface of the table top. The playful construction gives the table an astonishing appearance that changes depending on the position of the observer. Handcrafted to perfection, James Van Vossel’s sophisticated side table is most certainly an eye-catcher in living rooms and lounge areas.

Casual sitting comfort: expansion of bentwood range 2000

The bentwood sofa 2002 by Christian Werner, which was launched at last year’s Salone del Mobile, is now presented in perfect company: armchair 2001, like the sofa, is characterised by a filigree solid bentwood bracket that elegantly embraces the large, comfortable cushions – Werner pays homage to Thonet’s extensive bentwood heritage. The ottoman 2002 H visually harmonises with the upholstered elements of this range and perfects the sitting comfort. Put your legs up and sink into the inviting, flexibly positioned cushions is the motto!

A powerful quintet: new base frames for the club chair range S 830

After Emilia Becker of the Thonet Design Team presented her chair range S 830 with tubular steel four-leg frame and base plate panel at the Salone del Mobile 2015, three additional base frame versions now round out this range: a version with bentwood elements, a tubular steel cantilever frame and a four-leg cross frame have been added. The club chair, with its striking seat shell and flowing, edgy outlines, is now ready for any use – in hotel rooms, conference rooms or private living environments.

A breath of history: the modern solid wood table 1060

Table 1060 by Jorre van Ast is a successful example of the synthesis of Thonet’s bentwood heritage and contemporary graphic formal language. The individual elements of the bases are made of solid bentwood and establish the relationship with Thonet’s long tradition of bending wood. A lightweight, rectangular table top with rounded edges rests on two pairs of legs that split up at the top and, like a reversed “V”, separate towards the bottom. At the top of the leg pairs, a slender, round wood traverse connects the leg pairs beneath the table top. The warm material, wood, and the organically flowing lines of this table make it an inviting meeting place in living environments or a centrepiece of modern conference rooms.

A family for lounge chair 860

After last year’s successful introduction of lounge chair 860 by Lydia Brodde (Thonet Design Team), a two-seater bench, a rocking chair and two side tables now join in. The new additions to this family, like the wooden chair, emphasise the motif of the triangle. The clear lines of the wooden elements form an effective contrast with the soft, comfortable seat cushions. These models were inspired by a historic piece from the Thonet Archives and can be optimally grouped, presenting a harmonious ensemble in private and public spaces.

Thonet tradition times three: a coffee table duo at “Wallpaper* Handmade”

Thonet contributes a unique project to this year’s “Wallpaper* Handmade” exhibition of the British Wallpaper* magazine. Belgian designer Sylvain Willenz has created an elegant coffee table duo in two sizes using three typical Thonet materials at once: a tubular steel frame holds a bent solid wooden ring stretched with cane wicker. The wooden frame refers to the seat of architect Le Corbusier’s favourite chair, Thonet’s chair 209. “Wallpaper* Handmade” and the coffee table prototypes are on show during the Salone del Mobile in the Milan gallery The Arcade.
